
BIOGRAPHY
Australian Director and Opera singer Jane Magão joined the executive committee of Melbourne-based opera company IOpera in 2021 and has subsequently directed and produced three chamber productions with orchestra. Mozart's Cosí fan Tutte (Melbourne 2021), Handel's Acis and Galatea (Melbourne 2021) and Menotti's The Medium (Sydney 2023). In 2021, Jane was nominated for a Green Room Award for categories 'Best Direction in Opera' and 'Best Production' both for IOpera's production of Cosí Fan Tutte.
Having completed her time as a young artist with Melbourne Opera in 2022, Jane makes her Opera Australia principal debut as Musetta from La Boheme in the 2024 National Tour. Jane is both a freelance artist and casual chorus member with Opera Australia and Victorian Opera.
Other operatic roles include Sophie in Werther (BK Opera), Despina in Cosí Fan Tutte (IOpera), Galatea in Acis and Galatea (IOpera), Pamina in Die Zauberflöte (The Parlour), Adele in Die Fledermaus (Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta Victoria), Barbarina and Susanna (cover) in Le Nozze di Figaro (Melbourne Opera Studio), Soeur Constance in Dialogues des Carmelites (University of Melbourne), Dew Fairy in Hänsel und Gretel (Queensland Conservatorium), Apparition in Macbeth (Melbourne Opera), Woglinde (cover) in Rheingold from The Ring Cycle (Melbourne Opera), Second Nymph in Echo and Narcissus (Victorian Opera). Oratorio and concert appearances include Soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah and appearing as a finalist in the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Oratorio Competition Australia.
Singing accolades include being a two-time Runner up in the prestigious Herald Sun Aria competition in Melbourne, Australia 2021 and 2023 and winner of the National Liederfest Australia 2024. In 2023 Jane recorded with UK Label Toccata Classics the ‘Winter Came Early’ song cycle by award winning Australian contemporary composer Linda Kouvaras. This work was performed in multiple prestigious venues around Melbourne including the Melbourne Recital Centre in 2022.
A passionate music educator, Jane holds a Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Queensland (2017), a Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music Griffith University (2016) and a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFLEN) Cert.IV qualification (2018). Jane is a practicing, fully licensed & registered secondary classroom music & Italian teacher and is associated with the Queensland College of Teachers, the Victorian Institute of Teaching, the New South Wales Education Standards Authority and the Australian National Choral Association.
